Studio oirtrait of J M Jenkins, either 1717 Private (Pte) James Murray Jenkins or 4141 Pte James Macedon Jenkins. Pte James Murray Jenkins, a labourer from Morwell, Victoria prior to enlistment, had previously enlisted with the 4th Light Horse Regiment but had been medically discharged after being kicked by a horse. Later re-enlisting, he embarked with the 2nd Reinforcements, 46th Battalion from melbourne on HMAT Euripides on 4 April 1916. During the voyage he became ill with pneumonia and returned to Australia on 1 June 1916 and was again medically discharged. Following his recovery he re-enlisted once more and embarked for overseas service with the 15th Reinforcements, 13th Light Horse Regiment. Later joining the 1st Anzac Light Horse Regiment, he became ill and returned to Australia and was medically discharged on 20 December 1917. Pte James Macedon Jenkins was a soldier in the Australian Army Medical Corps prior to enlisting in the AIF, and embarked with the 10th Reinforcements, 22nd Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Wiltshire on 7 March 1916. Later transferring to the 5th Divisional Ammunition Column, he returned to Australia on 17 March 1919. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
