Description

Group portrait of 4854 Private (Pte) Thisle Love (left) and 4960 Pte Charles Edward Ernest Weaver, both 5th Battalion. Both men embarked with the 15th Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Wiltshire on 7 March 1916. Originally from Dunedin, New Zealand, Pte Love was a driver from Port Melbourne, Victoria prior to enlistment. Later suffering from bronchitis, he returned to Australia on 13 February 1917 and was medically discharged. Pte Weaver, a wood chopper from East Brunswick, Victoria later developed a hernia and returned to Australia on 21 April 1918 and was medically discharged. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. See also DA14085 & DA14086.
