Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of A. W. Smith, probably 9062 Gunner (Gnr) Albert William Smith. Originally from London, England, Gnr Smith was a farmer from Queenscliff, Victoria prior to enlistment and embarked with the 2nd Divisional Ammunition Column from Melbourne on HMAT Port Macquarie on 15 November 1915. Later serving with the 25th Field Artillery Brigade he was wounded in the back and, following his recovery he was wounded in the thigh and invalided to England. After recovering he transferred to the 14th Field Artillery Brigade and was wounded in the right leg. Once again invalided to England, he returned to Australia on 30 September 1919 and was medically discharged. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a permit to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
