Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of 11996 Gunner (Gnr) Percival Sutherland. A motor mechanic from West Armadale, Victoria prior to enlistment, Gnr Sutherland embarked with the 14th Reinforcements, 1st Divisional Ammunition Column from Melbourne on HMAT Themistocles on 28 January 1916. Later transferring to the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade he was killed in action on 29 March 1918 and was buried in the Dranoutre Military Cemetery, Flanders, Belgium. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a permit to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
