Description

Studio portrait of J Daly, probably 1555 Private (Pte) James Daly. A stockman from Tumbarumba, NSW prior to enlistment, Pte Daly embarked with the 12th Reinforcements, 4th Light Horse Regiment from Melbourne on HMAT Ceramic on 23 November 1915. He later transferred to the 2nd Anzac Light Horse Regiment and was appointed as a Shoeing Smith. He then served with the 13th Light Horse Regiment and then the Australian Veterinary Hospital where he was promoted to Temporary Farrier Corporal. He returned to Australia on 11 May 1919. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a permit to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. See also DA12480.
