Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait 1781 Private (Pte) Harry Vinicombe, 29th Battalion from St Kilda, Victoria. A 22 year old chauffeur prior to enlisting on 7 July 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 8th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 29 October 1915 aboard HMAT Demosthenes. While undergoing further training in Egypt, he was assigned to the 45th Battalion and deployed with them to France on 8 June 1916. He was wounded in action near Albert, France on 6 August 1916 and later died from his wounds at the 4th General Hospital, Camiers, France on 14 September 1916. Pte Vinicombe is buried in the Etaples Military Cemetery, France. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
