Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives

Studio portrait of two soldiers listed as A Henderson and Burnet. The soldier on the left is believed to be 3698 Private (Pte) Arthur James Burnet, 6th Battalion from Richmond, Victoria. A 22 year old wood machinist prior to enlisting on 24 July 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 12th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 23 November 1915 aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40). Following further training in Egypt, he proceeded to France in April 1916. Pte Burnet was promoted to Lance Corporal on 31 July 1916 and then wounded in action on 16 August 1916. He died of his wounds the next day and was buried in the Puchevillers British Cemetery, France. The soldier on the right is believed to be 3793 Pte Allan McGregor Henderson, 6th Battalion from Burnley, Victoria. A 20 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 31 July 1915, he also embarked for overseas with the 12th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 23 November 1915 aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40). Following further training in Egypt, he proceeded to France in April 1916. After being wounded in action on 26 July 1916, he was evacuated to England for medical treatment and then returned to Australia where he was discharged medically unfit for further service on 18 January 1918. [See also image DA12331.] This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
