Description

Group portrait of members of the Executive Committee Sports Depot. Identified back row, left to right: Lieutenant (Lt) Wardrop; Captain (Capt) Bladen; Lt Aitken and Sergeant Major (Sgt Maj) Brown-Parker. Front row: Private Irwin; Lt Edwards; Major (Maj) Cox-Taylor; Lt Garrett and Sergeant (Sgt) Isaac. Capt Bladen is probably Captain Chaplain Albert Percy Bladen, a minister from East Malvern, Victoria, prior to enlistment. He embarked from Melbourne with Headquarters, 23rd Battalion, aboard HMAT Euripides (A14) on 10 May 1915. Sgt Maj Brown-Parker is probably 3983 Company Sergeant Major Charles Nelson Brown-Parker, an athletic instructor from Essendon, Victoria, prior to enlistment. He embarked from Melbourne with the 12th Reinforcements, 5th Battalion, aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 23 November 1915. Maj Cox-Taylor is probably Lieutenant Colonel Herbert James Cox-Taylor a soldier from Queenscliff, Victoria, prior to enlistment in the AIF. He embarked from Melbourne with the 2nd Divisional Ammunition Column aboard HMAT Port Macquarie (A39) on 16 November 1915. Lt Garrett is probably Lt Harry Garrett, an accountant from Hawthorn, Victoria, prior to enlistment. Garrett embarked from Melbourne with Headquarters, 21st Battalion aboard HMAT Ulysses (A38) on 10 May 1915. Sgt Isaac is probably 23 Sgt Percy Richmond Isaac, a school teacher from Malvern , Victoria, prior to enlistment. He embarked from Melbourne with B Squadron, 3rd Light Horse, aboard HMAT Persic (A34) on 28 May 1915. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
