Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Portrait of Major Cox-Taylor standing in front of his horse. He is probably Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Herbert James Cox-Taylor a soldier from Queenscliff, Victoria, prior to enlistment in the AIF. He embarked from Melbourne with the 2nd Divisional Ammunition Column aboard HMAT Port Macquarie (A39) on 16 November 1915. Lt Col Cox-Taylor also served with the 25th Howitzer Brigade. In March 1917 he returned to Australia for staff duties and his appointment was terminated on 26 May 1917. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
