Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Outdoor group portrait of three officers, left to right, Lieutenant (Lt) Harry Lowry Moffitt; Lt (later Captain) Charles Alfred Melbourne Derham and Captain (Capt) Frank Marriott. Lt Moffitt, 21st Battalion, (later 53rd Battalion) a public accountant from Gisborne, Victoria enlisted on 29 March 1915 and embarked from Melbourne on 25 August 1915 aged 32. Lt Moffitt was killed in action at Fromelles on 19th July 1916 and he is commemorated on the memorial at VC Corner, Fromelles. Lt Derham, 29th Battalion, an inspector from Kew, Melbourne enlisted 3 March 1915 and embarked from Melbourne on 10 November 1915 aged 28. Capt Derham returned to Australia on 13 April 1919 and later served in the Second World War. Lt Marriott, 12th Battalion, a grazier from Wynyard, Tasmania, enlisted on 19 November 1914 and embarked from Melbourne on 16 October 1915, aged 38. Capt Marriott was severely wounded in the head on 25 February 1917, resulting in the loss of both eyes. He was invalided home and discharged on 27 August 1917. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
