Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Portrait of Illupmagee on horseback, probably 509 Shoeing Smith Roman Ilupmaggi, 2nd Signal Troop, 2nd Light Horse Brigade. Born in Russia (Estonia) and a shoeing smith from Sydney prior to enlistment, Ilupmaggi embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Borda on 22 December 1914. During his service Ilupmaggi was promoted to Corporal and transferred to the 4th Battalion. He was wounded in action and returned to Australia on 6 November 1918. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
