Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Outdoor portrait of J Lenard on horseback, probably 134 Trooper (Tpr) John Thomas Leonard, a labourer from Melbourne, Victoria, prior to enlistment. Tpr Leonard embarked from Melbourne with A Squadron, 8th Light Horse, aboard HMAT Star of Victoria (A16) on 25 February 1915. Tpr Leonard was killed in action at Gallipoli on 30 June 1915. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a permit to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks. (See also DAOD0584, DAOD0588 and DAOD0593)
