Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives

Studio portrait of 6972 Driver Charles James Campbell Macaw, 4th Field Artillery Brigade from Croxton, Victoria. A 30 year old warehouseman when he enlisted in the AIF on 28 June 1915, he embarked for overseas with the Ammunition Column from Melbourne on 18 November 1915 aboard HMAT Wiltshire. While serving in France he took ill with pleurisy and died on 10 June 1916 at the 26th General Hospital at Etaples. Driver Macaw is buried in the Camiers Road cemetery, Etaples, France. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930's the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or a unit name, for each negative.
