Description

Studio portrait of Fred Peterson either 2667 Private (Pte) Frederick Seymour George Peterson, 14th Battalion or 684 Pte Frederick Victor Peterson, 24th Battalion. 2667 Pte Peterson, a butcher from Gippsland, Victoria prior to enlistment, embarked with the 8th Reinforcements from Melbourne on SS Makarini on 15 September 1915. Following a brief period of service with the Camel Corps, he rejoined his battalion before transferring to the 5th Signals Troop and returned to Australia on 3 August 1919. He later went on to serve as a Warrant Officer caterer with the 1st Armoured Regiment during the Second World War. 684 Pte Peterson, a driver from South Melbourne, Victoria prior to enlistment, embarked with C Company from Melbourne on HMAT Euripides on 10 May 1915. Later returning to Australia with illness, he re-embarked for overseas service with the service number 4056 with the 12th Reinforcements, 12th Battalion. Later wounded in action, he returned to Australia on 20 November 1918. He went on to serve in the Second World War as a Private with the 12th Garrison Battalion. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
