Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of J J Moran, either 1966 Private James Joseph Moran, 21st Battalion or 1256 Pte John Joseph Moran 4th Light Horse Regiment. Pte James Moran, a labourer from Port Melbourne, Victoria prior to enlistment, embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Anchises on 26 August 1915. He was later awarded the Military Medal and promoted to Sergeant and returned to Australia on 31 March 1919. Pte John Moran, a farmer from Riddell’s Creek, Victoria prior to enlistment embarked with the 9th Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Hororata on 27 September 1915. Later transferring to the 1st Division Cyclist Corps, he returned to Australia on 26 October 1919. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
