Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of 1617 Private (Pte) Oswald Sagasser. A farmer from Allambee via Yarragon, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Sagasser embarked with the 1st Reinforcements, 31st Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Bakara on 5 November 1915. Later transferring to the 14th Field Artillery Brigade he was promoted to Corporal and wounded in action. He was evacuated to England and, following his recovery, rejoined his unit. Subsequently gassed he was again evacuated to England and was still recovering when the Armistice was declared. He returned to Australia on 12 December 1918. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a permit to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
