Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of A E Ross and 1836 Private (Pte) Thomas William Ahern (right). A driver from Windsor, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Ahern embarked with the2nd Reinforcements, 31st Battalion from Brisbane on HMAT Kyarra on 3 January 1916. He later transferred to the 46th Battalion and was appointed Acting Corporal. On 7 October 1916, aged 23, he was killed in action at Ypres and was buried in the Ridge Wood Military Cemetery, Dickebusch, Belgium. Unable to positively identify Ross from records. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. See also DASEY2259.
