Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Portrait of Lieutenant Hewson, probably Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Thomas Hewson, a baker from East Ararat, Victoria, prior to enlistment. 2nd Lt Hewson embarked from Melbourne with B Flight, No. 4 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps (AFC), aboard RMS Omrah on 17 January 1917. He was killed in action on 7 July 1917 and has no known grave. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
