Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Wrigley, probably Lt Henry Neilson Wrigley, a teacher from East Prahran, Victoria, prior to enlistment. Lt Wrigley embarked from Melbourne with B Flight, No. 2 Squadron, aboard HMAT Ulysses (A38) on 25 October 1916. During his service Wrigly was promoted to Captain and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for exceptional devotion to duty. Following the war Wrigley served in the RAAF, including as an Air Commodore in the Second World War. He was awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks. See also DAAV00055.
