Description
Two tanks of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO), moving through a desert area. UNTSO was set up in 1948, and was the first peacekeeping operation established by the United Nations (UN), following a resolution passed by the Security Council calling for a cessation of hostilities in Palestine. The first military observers arrived in 1949 and approximately 150 observers, supported by 125 local and international civilian staff, remain to this day. They are often called upon to support other peacekeeping forces in the area.
