Description

Collection relating to the Commonwealth Ceasefire Monitoring Force (CMF) service of Diane (Di) Katrina Johnstone, Australian Department of Foreign Affairs, Southern Rhodesia, 1979-1980.

The collection consists of one wallet and three oversized folios containing documents, newspaper clippings and ephemera related to Di Johnstone's work with the Department of Foreign Affairs at Salisbury and Inyanga, Southern Rhodesia, and the Australian contingent to the Commonwealth Ceasefire Monitoring Force (CMF) in 1979 to 1980.

Wallet 1 of 1 contains of three folders containing material collected by Johnstone during her time in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe. Folder 1 includes Johnstone's business card, Government House Salisbury pass, Salisbury Sports Club member's card, and a Christmas card from James Chikerema [President of the Front for the Liberation of Zimbabwe].

Folder 2 contains printed copies of 'Zimbabwe African National Union Policy Statement' booklet, outlining the policy of the Zimbabwe African National Union (1978), a 'Report of the Constitutional Conference' held in London, September to December 1979, 'Zimbabwe Rhodesia Chronological Table of Events' booklet listing important dates in Rhodesia's and Zimbabwe's history from 1817 to 1979, 'Results of Common Roll Election' booklet, dated February 1980, listing the results of the election in Southern Rhodesia, and a Department of Foreign Affairs inward cablegram about new Zimbabwean Ministers, dated 12 March 1980.

Folder 3 contains 'Halfway to the Elections', a paper prepared by the Catholic Institute for Relations on the situation in Rhodesia leading up to the 1980 elections, a list of contacts in Zimbabwe and their telephone numbers, a report on the Commonwealth Observer Group's activity in Zimbabwe for the 1980 election, dated 29 April 1980, and a speech given by Johnstone in Sydney following her return from Zimbabwe in 1982.

Oversize folio 1 of 3 consists of one edition of 'The National Observer' dated 17 April 1980, covering the lead up to the independence of Zimbabwe.

Oversize folio 2 of 3 consists of one edition of Salisbury's 'The Herald' dated 18 April 1980, covering Zimbabwe's transition to a republic.

Oversize folio 3 of 3 consists of 12 clippings from Zimbabwean and Australian newspapers relating to Zimbabwe's independence, the work of the CMF, and the violence in the lead up to the election.
