Description

Sapper 3 Field Troop Australian Engineers 11 September 1965 to 29 April 1966. Sapper 3 Field Troop Australian Engineers 30 April 1966 to 20 September 1966. Scene 9, Take 1; Ayoub a radio operator but because of exhaustion of men clearing tunnels, all hands were required to help. Describes inside of tunnels like being deaf, blind and in trouble for your life, entering the unknown. Sheer fear. ‘cottage’ industry of Viet Cong underground factories to produce booby traps and mines, etc. from strikers, Coca Cola cans and things left on the battlefield. To avoid detection above ground, seemingly innocuous bits of kit turned into functioning explosives underground. Australians told that Viet Cong were second rate farmers with a cause. In reality they had a strategic plan to reach ultimate goal. Scene 9, Take 2, roll 65; Iron Triangle a well known strong hold of the Viet Cong that (Army of the Republic of Vietnam) ARVN had resisted for years. Ho Bo Woods on the edge of the Iron Triangle and great tunnel complex. Commanding Officer of 173 Airborne decided to launch Operation Crimp. It became obvious that there were a lot more tunnels and tried to neutralise as many as possible before pulling out. Still haunted by death of Bob Bowtell.
