Informal portrait of SX9755 Private (Pte) Howard Nightingale, 2/3 Machine Gun Battalion. Captured after the fall of Singapore in early 1942 he, along with hundreds of other Australian prisoners of war (POW) was transported to Japan for use as forced labour. Nightingale was killed during a USAAF air raid on Yokohama on 3 October 1944. He and other POWs were engaged in digging air raid shelters for their captors at the time.
