Description

Informal portrait of 41629 Sergeant (Sgt) David Hayward Steele RAAF, attached to No. 453 Squadron, RAF of Heathpool, South Australia. Sgt Steele was killed in an aircraft accident near East Lothian, England on 28 August, 1942, and is buried in the Dirleton Cemetery near East Lothian. He was the younger brother of Sgt Geoffrey Moore Steele (pilot) RAAF, attached to No. 211 Squadron RAF who went missing off the coast of Sumatra on 6 February, 1942. Sgt Geoffrey Steele has no known grave, and is listed on the Singapore Memorial.
