Studio portrait of 1917 Sapper (Spr) William Thompson, 9th Reinforcements, 1st Field Company Engineers, of Double Bay NSW. Spr Thompson enlisted on 14 August 1915 and embarked Melbourne aboard HMAT Port Lincoln on 16 October 1915. He was later transferred to the 14th Field Company Engineers. Spr Thompson received gun shot wounds to his back at Bapaume, France, and died on 2 November 1916, aged 21 years. Two members of this family also served with the AIF. They were his brother 1106 Driver J C Thompson, 14th Australian Army Service Corps, who returned to Australia on 23 October 1918, and his cousin and foster brother 1450 Private Thomas Ferrier (also Tristram), 13th Battalion, of Paddington, NSW, who was killed in action on 11 April 1917 at Bullecourt, France.
