Description

The RAAF firing party and locals at the funeral of two Second World War airmen whose remains were recently recovered by the RAAF, 57 years after they were reported missing in action. The remains were recovered near the wreck of an RAAF Beaufighter A19-97 that crashed 40 km south-east of Rabaul on the island of New Britain, Papua New Guinea. The airmen were identified as 3406 Flight Lieutenant Derrick Robert Stone, pilot, Clifton Hill, Vic and 1433 Flying Officer Edward Burford Morris-Hadwell, wireless air observer, both of No 30 Squadron. Both men were reported missing on 12 October 1943.
