Description
Portrait of 11 Brigadier (Brig) Robert Harold Nimmo (left), and 401638 Pilot Officer (PO) James Andrew Harold Nimmo, 103 Squadron, RAAF, who enlisted on 29 March 1941. PO Nimmo was posted to the United Kingdom and joined a squadron equipped with Avro Lancaster bomber aircraft. Nimmo and his crew were detailed to carry out the task of laying mines along the German and Polish shore in the Baltic, the area around Gdynia. On 10 April 1944, after completing their mission, Nimmo and his crew were returning to base but were intercepted by a German night fighter aircraft based in German occupied Denmark and shot down. The two air gunners were able to bail out of the aircraft and survived. PO Nimmo and four others of the crew perished.
