Description

Studio portrait of 19104 Gunner (Gnr) Wilfred Foxton King Kemp, 28th Battery, 7th Field Artillery Brigade, of Bellingen, NSW. A solicitor prior to enlisting on 16 December 1915, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Argyleshire on 11 May 1916. Gnr Kemp was wounded on 11 April 1917, at Arras, France, whilst coming off duty during his first battle. He died on 29 May 1917, aged 28 years. He was serving with the 10th Field Artillery Brigade at the time of his death. When news of his death reached Bellingen, the town flags were put to half mast. His brother, 3528 Driver Phillip Sydney King Kemp, 101 Howitzer Battery, died of wounds on 18 October 1917. He was a descendant of Phillip Gidley King, Third Governor of NSW, one of over 50 whom served in the First World War.
