Group portrait of members of No 24 Course, No. 5 Service Flying Training School (5 SFTS), RAAF, taken on their graduation day. SFTS trained RAAF cadets, providing intermediate and advanced training as part of the Empire Air Training School.

Known to be in this group are 414515 Aircraftman John William Turnbull, of Brisbane, Qld and 420544 Aircraftman Joseph Armstrong (Joe) Boulton, originally of Durham, England. After receiving his wings, Turner was hospitalised in Australia for tonsillitis. After leaving hospital he was sent to Eshott near Newcastle, England to repeat his operational training unit. He was then posted to 130 Squadron, RAF, where he stayed until the end of the war. Turnbull flew many missions with the squadron, both in England and in Europe including sorties for D Day flying Spitfires VB. He rose to the rank of Warrant Officer and after the war served with the Active Citizens Air Force (number A18080) from 1952 until 1954, instructing in all forms of flying. After graduation Joe Bolton was sent directly to join 130 Squadron, RAF. He had enlisted on 8 November 1941 and attained the rank of flying officer with 130 Squadron at his discharge on 17 April 1946. Boulton was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on 26 July 1945.
