Description

Brown lightweight canvas kit bag with 12 metal eyelets around the opening and an internal flap. This internal flap has the letter 'W' stamped on it and the handwritten words 'WF45600 Sig E.V.QUIRK WF45600'. The flap was used to secure the contents when the bag was drawn shut. Stencilled in large letters on the side of the bag is 'WF. 45600 SIGWMN. PENALUNA,E.V.'

History / Summary

This kit bag was used by WF45600 Signalwoman Ethel Veronica Quirk. She was born in Perth in October 1924 and enlisted in the Australian Womens Army Service on 15 June 1942. She trained in signals and served with 15 Australian Lines of Communication Signals. In 1944 she married Private Alan Penaluna, but remained in Perth with her unit when he was posted to Melbourne for the remainder of the war. She was discharged on 2 November 1945 and her husband in April the following year.
