Description

9 carat gold watch fob presented to Private Norman Brown Copeland upon his return to Australia after the First World War.
Fob is in the shape of a shield. Obverse features a Rising Sun, crossed rifles, saluting soldier and colour patch for 4 Battalion, AIF. Three blue enamelled bars across the top of the shield read 'DUTY/BRAVELY/DONE'. A blue enamelled boomerang shape at the bottom of the shield reads 'RETURNED'.
Reverse is engraved with the inscription 'Presented to Pte. N.B. Copeland by the residents of Maude & District in appreciation of his services in the Great War 1914-18'.

History / Summary

This watch fob was presented to Private Norman Brown Copeland in 1919 by the citizens of Maude, NSW, to commemorate his safe return from service in the First World War. Copeland was born in Waradgery NSW in 1897. He was working as a groom at Maude, near Hay, when he enlisted in the AIF on 7 March 1916, at Cootamundra, and was assigned to the 19th Reinforcements of 4 Infantry Battalion. Private Copeland served with his battalion in France and left to return to Australia on 31 June 1919. He was discharged on 28 August 1919. Copeland died in 1969.
