Description

Woman's khaki wool twill single breasted jacket, lined throughout with twilled cream cotton. Loose fitting jacket has self fabric belt secured by two buttons. Jacket has a turn back lapel collar and two large patch pockets, each secured by a single button, over each hip. Each upper sleeve bears a white embroidered eagle badge, with black details, on a black ground. The left lapel has a brass Women's Legion brooch badge attached. The RAF buttons, made by Firmin's, London, are of brown varnished brass. Inside collar has a woven black ribbon tape with fawn lettering 'The "Aquatite" RAIN COAT'. Inside back lining is stamped in black 'R.A.F. 2' +within a square.

History / Summary

Worn by 6702 Miss Constance Ockenden (later Mrs Campbell) during her service as a cook with the Women's Royal Air Force (WRAF) from February 1918 to 1919. She had previously served with the Women's Legion. Constance Ockenden was born in India c 1896. After she had served during the First World War she emigrated to Australia, with her family, in the 1920s, where she married. She died in 1991.
The WRAF used the khaki uniform from its inception in February 1918 until late 1919 when a blue uniform was introduced.
