Description
Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Frederick George Smith, 2nd Battalion, prior to embarking for service overseas. Lt Smith enlisted in Newcaste, NSW, on 3 September 1914, and embarked from Sydney on 18 October 1914 aboard HMAT Suffolk. Lt Smith took part in the first landing on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 25 April 1915. He was mortally wounded two days later, on 27 April, and evacuated to a hospital in Cairo, Egypt, where he died of wounds on 8 May 1915.
