Studio portrait of 264 Private Archibald Joseph Keens, 1st Battalion. A carriage fitter of Lewisham, he embarked on HMAT Afric (A19) on 18 October 1914. He was killed in action on 1 May 1915 on the Gallipoli peninsula. Two brothers also served: 1236 Private David Keens, 4th Battalion was killed in action on 22 July 1916 at Pozieres, France, and 6824 Private Charles Henry Keens, 17th Battalion returned to Australia on 31 March 1919.
