Description

Indonesian President Bacharuddin Jusuf (B J) Habibie (left), addresses the press, accompanied by General Wiranto (right) and an unidentified lieutenant general in the Tentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI) (Indonesian National Army) (centre). The press conference is being held at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta. President Habibie is announcing that Indonesia would accept a United Nations (UN) peacekeeping force for East Timor, to restore order after violence continued following the independence referendum in August 1999. Gen Wiranto was accused of complicity in human rights abuses committed in the wake of East Timor's vote for independence. The Australian led International Force for East Timor (INTERFET) arrived in East Timor just eight days later, on 20 September 1999.
