Mourners gather around the open coffin of Francisco Manuel Gusmao during his burial at the Santa Cruz Cemetery. Francisco Gusmao, 84 years old at the time of his death, was the father of Xanana Gusmao, a leader of Fretilin, the East Timorese resistance organisation, and commander of Falintil, its armed wing. Following the announcement of the pro-independence ballot result, pro-Indonesian militias launched a campaign of arson, murder and destruction across the territory. Xanana Gusmao was released from house arrest on 7 September 1999, and fled to Australia. He returned when stability was restored by the Australian led International Force for East Timor (INTERFET). In May 2002, Xanana Gusmao became President of an independent East Timor (Timor Leste).
