Description

A man in traditional dress stands disconsolate amidst the ruins of Dili's municipal marketplace. The Portuguese style market dominated Dili trading until it was destroyed by anti-independence militia in the aftermath of East Timor's vote for independence from Indonesia. Australian forces were deployed to East Timor on 20 September 1999 as part of the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET); an Australian led international mission to bring peace and stability to the former colony under a United Nations mandate.
