Troops of the Tentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI) (Indonesian National Army) departing from the Dili ...
Description
Troops of the Tentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI) (Indonesian National Army) departing from the Dili port area in East Timor. Indonesian forces invaded East Timor in December 1975, and had remained stationed in the territory ever since. They were accused of numerous human rights abuses under the Soeharto regime, and of collusion with killings, arson and intimidation by members of anti-independence militias in the wake of the referendum of 30 August 1999. Following the arrival of the Australian led International Force for East Timor (INTERFET), from 20 September 1999, Indonesia began a phased withdrawal of its forces.
