Description

Bishop Carlos Belo, surrounded by worshippers, on Christmas Eve. The population of East Timor are predominantly Catholic, and Bishop Belo played an important role in defending the rights of the East Timorese while under Indonesian rule, for which he received the Nobel peace prize in 1996. On this first Christmas Eve after the arrival of the Australian led International Force for East Timor (INTERFET), many residents of Dili are attending midnight mass at Bishop Belo's residence. During the years of Indonesian occupation, the authorities made the traditional Christmas Eve midnight mass impossible by imposing a 10pm curfew.
