General Wiranto (left), Commander Indonesian Armed Forces, and General Subagyo Hadisiswoyo (right), Chief of Staff, Tentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI) (Indonesian National Army), at a press conference at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta. At this press conference President Bacharuddin Jusuf (B J) Habibie announced that Indonesia would accept a United Nations (UN) peacekeeping force for East Timor, to restore order after violence continued following the independence referendum in August 1999. The Australian led International Force for East Timor (INTERFET) arrived in East Timor just eight days later, on 20 September 1999.
