Khaki tunic: New Zealand Army
Unlined khaki coloured, twill weave wool tunic. There are five buttons at center front, two hooks and eyes at neck. A pair of pleated patch pockets with buttoned flaps are on the upper breast. The tunic has a pair of set in pockets with buttoned flaps to lower front, constructed of will weave cotton calico. The cuffs are hemmed only. The front of the shoulders are reinforced with second layer of wool fabric. The epaulettes consist of a pair of buttoned shoulder straps. Above the left breast pocket are ribbons of the Queens and Kings South Africa medals. The collar is lined with twill weave khaki cotton, with a handing loop at back. There is a calico cotton plain weave reinforcing to the pockets and belt loops. There are remnants of a paper label on the inside, behind proper right patch pocket.
During the First World War the New Zealand Army extensively used British made and British pattern uniforms and other equipment for use by their troops in the Middle East and on the Western Front. This British made tunic is an example of this relationship between the 'mother country' and the New Zealand Army.
