Newton depicts his journey to New Guinea with the 39 Supply Depot Company and living conditions aboard the "Anhui". Newton gives an account of his experiences in Port Moresby, Buna and the Lae area, New Guinea during the period 1943 to 1945. He details his work on refrigeration plants and water supply and describes the local people, flora and fauna, and tropical hazards. Newton also recounts specific incidents, some tragic, some comic, and describes his sudden marriage to Daphne during leave.
