Twelve miniature fund raising bricks : War Service Homes, Mascot 1916
Description
Set of twelve miniature fired bricks, each impressed 'W.S.H 1916' on one side and 'MASCOT' on the reverse. Colours vary from white to terracotta and sizes vary slightly, averaging 35 x 15 x 10mm.
History / Summary
Fundraising miniature bricks sold in Adelaide every Friday, on 'Badge Day' from 1916 to 1919 by Mrs Annie Roberts of St Peters, grandmother of Barry John Roberts (see REL34054, 34055, 34056). The bricks were a novel fundraising idea, offered in conjunction with the 'Brick Day' badge (see REL34058) and sold in support of homes for repatriated soldiers, specifically the War Veterans Home still extant on the Myrtle Bank site in Adelaide, which served as a Repatriation Hospital during the First World War from March 1917.
