Description

Square rayon scarf with a map of Korea, Japan and the surrounding area. Surmounting the map is the title ' The United Nations'. Japan is shown in the centre and is coloured grey. One the left hand side of the scarf is Korea with the 38th Parallel indicated in red. The scarf has a navy blue border with the United Nations flags including Australia, Belgium, Unidentified flag, France, Denmark, Ethiopia, Greece, India, Sweden, New Zealand, United Kingdom, America, Japan, Thailand, France, Turkey, South Africa 1950, Philippines and Norway. Surrounding the map of Japan are the patches of the countries represented by the flags. The scarf has been signed by the majority of the members of Prendergast's Platoon.

History / Summary

Joseph Edward Prendergast was born on 4 February 1927 in Bendigo, Victoria. He served with 3 Battalion RAR with the service number 3400510 from 4 July 1952 through to 3 July 1953. He was discharged with the rank of Private. He bought this scarf in Tokyo in March 1953, while on leave. The scarf was signed by the members of his platoon, including Leo Howe who died of wounds on 26 June 1953.
