Bushells wartime issue coffee jar
Description
Glass jar with ridges along each side and the trade name 'Bushells' on the bottom. The screw-top lid is impressed into the top with 'Bushells VACUUM PACKED Coffee'. Inside the paper lining of the lid is printed with the message 'NOT VACUUM PACKED NOW Because Tin is reserved for Defence purposes we are unable to obtain inner seals for vacuum packing. Bushells Pty.Ltd.' This is followed by the printed word 'PACKED' and the stamped date '29FEB1943'.
History / Summary
This jar was found in a Sydney home in 2004. The production of the lid without tin seals is an example of the measures introduced in the domestic market in order to conserve materials for the war effort.
