Description

Australian Army Landing Craft Medium (LCM8) (serial number AB 1059), approaches Red Beach to land Australian soldiers and a bulldozer on Guadalcanal. HMAS Manoora, in the background, is operating in Iron Bottom Sound on the first day of Operation Anode, Australia's military and policing contribution to the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI). Having secured the beach area with no armed opposition, Australian soldiers established a base camp nearby, at the former Guadalcanal Beach Resort. Red Beach had also been the location for American amphibious landings during the Guadalcanal campaign of the Second World War.
