Description

Villagers from Nagovis district of Bougainville, including members of King Tore's 666 Movement, escort regional peacekeepers to a reconciliation ceremony. The peacekeepers are possibly members of the United Nations (UN) Observer Mission Bougainville (UNOMB), and/or the Australian-led Peace Monitoring Group (PMG). After a long period of civil war between separatist groups and the Papua New Guinea government, regional peacekeeping groups have performed the role of monitoring the ceasefire in Bougainville, and facilitating the peace process. The Truce Monitoring Group (TMG) formed after the Burnham Declaration of July 1997 at peace talks in New Zealand. In 1998 a permanent ceasefire was agreed to, and the TMG was succeeded the PMG.
