Studio portrait of 1704 Private (Pte) John Rowand Alwyn (Jack) Lahey, 25th Battalion, of Corinda, Qld. Pte Lahey enlisted in May 1915 and embarked for service overseas with the 2nd Reinforcements, 25th Battalion, aboard HMAT Shropshire (A9) on 20 August 1915. He served in the Gallipoli campaign for a short period before being evacuated in November 1915 to Heliopolis, Egypt, by hospital ship with severe enteric fever. On 28 January 1916 he was discharged from hospital and invalided home to Brisbane for three months recuperation. Although he had not fully recovered, Pte Lahey again departed Australia to return to active service in April 1916, and rejoined his battalion in France several months later. In January 1917 he was promoted to the rank of corporal. Whilst serving in France in October 1917, Corporal Lahey suffered a gunshot wound to the arm. After being evacuated to England for hospital treatment, he was discharged and invalided home to Australia in December 1917.
