Senior Commissioned Gunner of HMAS Bataan is 929 F H Pitt of Gladesville, NSW, shown checking his position 'line astern' with a distance meter. Fine adjustment on the instrument needs bare hands, which is chilly work in the bitter offshore winds that blow on the Korean coast. Bataan has had the longest Korean operational service of any British Commonwealth ship, and Mr Pitt was one of her officers long before that.
