Wrist mounted map board : Cadet S R Crimp, Royal Military College, Duntroon
Wooden wrist-mounted map or field sketching board. At the top of the front face is an inbuilt compass with a rotating bezel ring and markings in 10 degree increments. Below this is a scale of 6 inches with the first inch marked in 50 parts. The scale at the bottom indicates 'YARDS 2 INCHES = 1 MILE'. At each vertical side of the board is a black painted steel scroll roller used to secure paper across the face of the board. On the back face is a pivoting leather buckled strap for attachment to the wrist, and an inbuilt clinometer. Written at the top is '312 S.R.CRIMP.', and stamped at the bottom are two broad arrow markings and 'HOUGHTON-BUTCHER IV LONDON - 1917 11149'.
Designed to be worn on the wrist of mounted officers and scouts, this map board was used by 312 Sydney Robert 'Bob' Crimp while serving as a cadet at the Royal Military College (RMC), Duntroon, during the 1920s. Crimp was born in New Zealand on 10 December 1899 and attended RMC as part of the regular contingent sent from that country to undertake staff training in Australia.
